A Tribute To John Folby: Opening Reception At LGBT Center Of Central PA In Harrisburg PA

December 3, 2019 - 5:00PM to 8:00PM EST

In honor of World AIDS Day, the LGBT Center will be hosting "A Tribute to John Folby: An Exhibit of Documents and Artifacts Related to his Work in HIV/AIDS" in our gallery during the month of December.

We invite you to join us for an opening reception on Monday, December 2 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Center to celebrate his life and his work. Light refreshments will be provided.

John Folby succumbed to cancer on July 11, 2019. He died peacefully at the Hospice of Central PA residence. John was born in 1947 and raised in Pittsburgh by his parents Sam and Mary Keenan Folby. He graduated from St. Basil's HS and attended Point Park College. His first job was with Kaufmann's Department Store before relocating to Harrisburg in 1975 where he subsequently joined the Dept. of Public Welfare where he served as the Director of the Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program, PA's AIDS drug assistance program, for over 15 years.

Under John's leadership, thousands of Pennsylvanians with a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS gained access to critical life-extending and life-sustaining medications. His work with the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ communities earned him numerous awards and a statewide and national reputation as a dedicated and compassionate advocate.

John was a member of Dignity/Central PA and was an active volunteer with the Harrisburg Gay Men’s Chorus, the Central PA Womyn’s Chorus, and the LGBT Center of Central PA History Project. John is survived by his partner of 50 years, Dalton David Secor, family members, and his many friends.
